Daylighting
Daylighting is the controlled application of diffused natural light into a building’s interior, thus drastically reducing the use of electric lighting and therefore saving energy. Daylighting provides a direct connection to the dynamic and continuously evolving patterns of outdoor lighting, while providing a visually invigorating and productive environment for the people inside, and reducing the building’s total energy costs.
An effectively day lit building is the product of a combination of architecture and engineering. Component daylighting systems are not “skylights”. A true daylighting system is a series of integrated components which harvest, direct and diffuse natural light into interior spaces. The quantity and distribution of natural light effectively replaces electric lighting for most of the daylight hours.
